Nee Soon East Playground

Completed 2024

Nee Soon East Playground

The collaboration between Nee Soon East (NSE) and EWB (SG) officially began in July 2022, with a shared vision: to build a playground rooted in sustainability.

Reflecting this theme, the playground is primarily constructed using recycled materials, extending their life cycle while reducing environmental impact.

To honour Yishun’s rich pineapple plantation history, a sandpit featuring low, pineapple-shaped play elements was thoughtfully designed and assembled. A small slide made from repurposed PVC pipes and marine plywood has quickly become a favourite among local children. The entrance and exit fences were built using upcycled wooden pallets and crates, lovingly painted and decorated by members of the Yishun community. Features of the playground also include the use of unique recycled materials such as old MRT train seats.

Since the project’s inception, monthly build sessions have brought together volunteers and partners, including Ground-Up Initiative (GUI) and SEMULA, whose support has been vital in developing safe, durable, and environmentally friendly play structures.

By building thoughtful play spaces that give life to old materials, we hope to encourage sustainability in the simplest of spaces and society-driven effort in the conservation of our environment.

As of present, we’ve proudly handed the reins to NSE who will continue the work towards completing the playground.
